Today, an unprecedented gathering of Australia’s Commonwealth Commissioners and Ambassadors took place at Government House Canberra, hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and convened by Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commissioner Micaela Cronin.

The meeting brought together Commonwealth Commissioners and Ambassadors from across Australia’s human rights, gender equality, safety and justice sectors to make a united declaration:

No More Violence - in our homes, workplaces, online spaces, or communities.

Commissioners and Ambassadors reinforced the urgent need to prioritise those most affected by violence, recognising the devastating impact it continues to have across Australia.

“We all have a right to live our lives free from violence. Ensuring safety is a collective responsibility, all sectors of society must work together to drive change, which is why we are coming together today” Commissioner Cronin said.

“In September 2024 National Cabinet made addressing family, domestic and sexual violence a priority.  All Australian governments have committed to the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022-2032, and everyone at the table today has committed to ensuring focus on this Plan does not waver.”

The meeting highlighted the importance of ending violence in childhood, ensuring early intervention to protect children and supporting their healing and recovery. Addressing the rise of online misogyny and radicalisation was also recognised as critical in preventing the spread of harmful attitudes that fuel violence.

Commissioners and Ambassadors emphasised the need to leverage every opportunity for prevention more effectively, and the importance of engaging men and boys in driving cultural change and creating safer communities.

The Commissioners and Ambassadors reaffirmed that violence is not inevitable – it is preventable. “By working together, listening to those most affected and taking action, lasting change is not only possible but vital” Commissioner Cronin said.

“There is hope in unity,” the Commissioners and Ambassadors declared.

“Together, we can deliver. Together we say no more.”
